Do you know me now?

When I came out to my niece about 15 years ago, her first response was anger because I had not told her before. Once she got over that, her first comment was, “are you ready for what happens now?” I assumed she meant homophobia, and said, “it’ll be ok, I can stand up for myself.” She said, “no, not ready for people slamming you, but when they hear you’re a lesbian they’ll think they know all about you.” I was surprised and impressed by the insight, she was 15 then. I asked her, “How do you know people will do that?” she said, “that happens to me all the time. People judge me by my skin colour. they think because i’m black i listen to certain music, read certain books, like certain movies, have a certain sex life, etc. Now people will be doing that to you once they know you’re a lesbian, they’ll think they know everything, they’ll pre-judge you.”

I hadn’t even thought of that. I was amazed by her insight and her experiences. But wendy was an awesome kid. I tell her she was born smiling. More about her on another blog, or this one will get way too long!
